This audition season, we had more submissions than ever for MTC. We were blown away by the talent and the interest in musical theatre!

With the goal of amalgamating BSB with MTC, and expanding MTC to find a place for everyone to share in the stage magic of a full-scale production, we are implementing MTC Expanded - The Newsies Chorus.

 

Here’s What You Need to Know about the NEWSIES CHORUS:

In weekly classes, participants will dive into Newsies material and gain a behind-the-scenes look at the journey from casting to closing in a large production.

At the end of the season, the chorus will have the opportunity to perform as off-stage singers, and will make special stage appearances for the Newsies production.

It’s a comprehensive theatre experience that aligns with the goals of Bite Size Broadway, now with the excitement of being part of a larger show!

Class Schedule:

  • When: Thursdays, 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM

  • Duration: October 17th until March 20th

Performances  (**opt-in/out available):

  • When: March 23rd - April 13th, 2025

Note: Classes conclude Thursday March 20th. You can choose your own preference for your involvement in the Newsies production from there:

Option 1: Opt out of Newsies shows entirely.

Option 2: Participate in Newsies shows for weekend shows only (no school will be missed)

Option 3: Participate in ALL Newsies shows, including school shows (totalling 19 shows - students miss 7 days of school in total.)

*depending on numbers, we may create two “Newsie Chorus” groups that would alternate through the schedule. 

We completely understand that committing to 19 shows may not work for everyone. Participation in the performance is entirely optional, but we’re excited to offer this enriching experience nonetheless. 

FAQ

  • The Newsies Chorus tuition is 3 instalments of $292.60 + HST.

    Tuition cost is all inclusive, and covers student workbooks, cast t-shirts, and show costumes.

  • As for the performances in Drayton, the Newsies Chorus is set up in the band room, and they sing throughout the show. They'll then join on stage as one of the 'Burroughs' for the big Newsies numbers (making a few special appearances on the big stage!)

    Our hope with the Newsies Chorus is that being part of a large production, in a Drayton theatre, would be a big excitement that would be inspiring and educational.

    (On a personal note, Devan and I were introduced to professional theatre in this 'Show Chorus' format, and it was the thing that hooked us on theatre!)

  • Classes are mainly led by Matt Chittick, our MTC vocal coach. He's awesome - very kind, fun, friendly and SO good at bringing out the best in the kids! Matt will guide the chorus through learning all of the Newsies songs. In addition to Matt's teachings, there are occasional guest teachers. Devan and Paige will be teaching choreography, Sara Graham (The Newsies costume designer) will be popping in for costuming workshops, and Sarah Lappano (our acting coach) will be guiding some acting scenes and games as well!

  • The Newsies Chorus is for students from 8 - 18, just like our musical!

  • Performances  (**opt-in/out available):

  • We believe in giving something a good try! Come on out to Newsies Chorus, and if after a month it doesn't feel like it's right for you, we will issue a full refund less the classes you took.

  • No problem! The Newsies Chorus uses Google Classroom as a practice resource, so any time you miss a class, you won't miss any material! It'll all be in the classroom for you each week.

  • Getting to Teeswater each week may be tough - because both MTC and Newsies Chorus land on Thursday evenings in Teeswater, we're able to coordinate ride shares to spread the driving around! If getting to class each week proves difficult, we are happy to do what we can to arrange a carpool for you!
